Penance and Reconciliation

Penance and Reconciliation

Jesus entrusted the ministry of reconciliation to the Church. The Sacrament of Penance is God's gift to us so that any sin committed after Baptism can be forgiven. In confession we have the opportunity to repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. It is a holy moment in which we place ourselves in his presence and honestly acknowledge our sins, especially mortal sins.

With absolution, we are reconciled to God and the Church. The Sacrament helps us stay close to the truth that we cannot live without God. "In Him, we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

First Reconciliation

Preparation begins in the fall of each year for children in grade 2 and older. St. John's follows the guidelines of the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis and requires children be prepared for the Sacrament of Penance prior to receiving Eucharist. Preparation is family-centered, using materials separate from but aligning with curriculum used in the school and RE classrooms.

Children preparing for First Sacraments are required to be enrolled in a faith formation program, either through a Catholic school or Parish Religious Education program, for an entire year prior to preparing for sacraments.
