St. John's 55+ Group

Any parishioner who is of the age 55 is most welcome to attend the 55+ Group events. In turn, parishioners are encouraged to invite a friend, neighbor, relative to join us-it is not necessary to be a St John's parishioner to participate. This is an informal social group with no membership requirement and no fee to pay. Any charge for an event is only intended to cover the costs specifically associated with that event. Each month we have the following:

·    At 8:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month following morning Mass we have a gathering. Coffee, juice, and pastries are provided followed by a short program. Some presentations have included the mayors of Burnsville and Savage; a three-part health series on CPR, diabetes, and sleep disorders from St Francis Medical Center; travelogues by 55+ Group participants, a piano sing-a-long at Christmas; veterans benefits information; and updates from parish staff members.

·     Each month we have an event, typically around mid-month. Four of the events are at the church including the December Christmas party, February Valentine's Day party, March St. Patrick's Day party and June Flag Day picnic.  We often take a boat cruise during the summer. Some of the events have included visiting the Minnesota History Center, Como Conservatory and Zoo, and Hill House in St Paul; attending plays at the Old Log and Chanhassen theatres; touring the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis; trips to LaCrosse, Rochester, and New Ulm; visiting Sharing and Caring Hands and preparing food bags at Feed My Starving Children; and touring the Cathedral and Basilica. We travel in very nice and comfortable deluxe motor coaches, and enjoy stopping for lunch!

The 55+ Group also offers the opportunity for those persons who might want to reach out and volunteer in our parish school. A major annual event in the school is Grandparents Day when grandmas and grandpas join students to fill the church for this very special Mass, and then visit the children in the classrooms. Some students want a "grandparent for a day," and we have 55+ participants who look forward to this special outreach. There are also needs in the lunchroom, at the welcome desk, in the office, and assisting with reading and math skills.
