RE Registration begins! All parish families should receive registration materials for the 2009-2010 school year in the mail very soon. Electronic copies of the registration brochure with registration form already are available right here, on-line for you to review, print, complete and return.
St. John's religious education programs include:
Sunday School: For children who are 3, 4 and 5 years old as of Sept. 1 (and who are toilet-trained). Classes are scheduled during the 9 a.m. Mass on Sundays. Class ratios are 10 children to two trained, background-checked volunteer catechists. In addition to learning about God and their Catholic faith through a lectionary-based program, children also experience crafts, special holiday celebrations and music throughout the year.
Elementary program (Grades 1-6): Families may choose one of three sessions: 4:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays. Classes are housed in St. John's classrooms. There are usually 10 students in each class with at least one trained, background checked volunteer catechist. The program curriculum introduces children to the foundations of the Catholic faith: doctrine, tradition, sacraments, scripture, saints and people of faith, liturgy and prayer. The curriculum used in the elementary program is Call to Faith, published by Harcourt Religion Publishers.
**Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist is offered in a family-centered program for children in Grade 2 or older. Participation in a faith formation program, either through St. John's RE program or Catholic school, is required for children preparing for these sacraments.
Junior High Program (Grades 7-9): Classes are offered on Wednesday evenings in catechists' homes starting between 6:30 and 7 p.m. The junior high curriculum focuses on issues which help young people better understand their Catholic faith and integrate it into their everyday lives.
Grade 10: The curriculum focuses specifically on preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation in February. All young people in Grade 10 (or older), regardless of their participation in religious formation in the past, are invited to enroll in this preparation program. Classes meet on Wednesdays in catechists' homes.
**Tenth graders attending Catholic high schools are required to register for Confirmation preparation but attending weekly classes is optional.
Grades 11-12: A Bible study using the T3: Teen Timeline is offered for young people who have been confirmed.
Tuition, if registered prior to July 1, 2009, is $95 per student with a family maximum of $275. After July 1, fees increase to $105 per student, with a family maximum of $305. Payment plans may be arranged and financial assistance is available on request. An additional fee of $60 covers the cost of preparation for both Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist; a $85 fee covers all costs associated with Confirmation preparation, including the required retreat.
All classes are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the availability of volunteers. Some classes and sessions fill quickly, so please register as soon as possible. Registration deadline is August 1. After August 1, children will be placed in classes as room and number of volunteers allow.
